Feedback Styles and How We Build Trust in Multicultural Teams

Trust!

Do I trust you to deliver by deadline? Do I trust you to do what you say you will do? Do I trust you to give me the feedback I need when I need it?

Some of these questions may be easier to answer than others. Also, the way in which we achieve ‘trust’ in these scenarios may be fundamentally different. This is especially true when we have varying approaches to the way we work that may be intrinsically linked to our cultures. And of course, we all have cultural influences. All of us!

One thing is a little clearer, and that is this: within a business, and within a team, the need for trust is essential. But let’s be honest, it’s not always there. Or at least not to the extent that we would like it to be.

As a professional who focusses on communication and engagement within multicultural teams, one angle that I can attempt to address here and now, at least in part, is the fact that, when we have different cultural approaches to how we communicate and how we work, the way in which we build trust, and what we view as ‘untrustworthy behaviour’, can be substantially different.

So let us return to the question: Do I trust you to give me the feedback I need when I need it?
