making requests

What is it?

What is clear and polite when it comes to asking someone to do something in one culture may be very unclear and considered completely impolite in another culture.

In any team, sharing tasks and information as well as supporting each other is essential for carrying out the work that needs to be done. One of the most important communicative functions in a team environment is to ask fellow team members to do something, that is to make a request. For example, you might ask a colleague to take on a particular task, send you information or documents related to a project, help you with something, adjust work, or review something for you.

Due to the different ways of making a request from one culture to another, in multicultural work environments, asking someone else for something can often be a situation that causes friction amongst team members and leads to misunderstandings around what exactly needs to be done.
